Black Americans’ Diminished Health Returns of Employment During COVID-19 Pandemic

Introduction: Employment is a major social determinant of health (SDoH) and core socioeconomic status (SES) indicator. This study used nationally representative sample American adults to test the association between employment self-rated (SRH) overall by race. Methods: Using data from Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS 2020) Cycle 4, this analysis included 1403 individuals including 1109 (79%) non-Latinx White 294 (21%) Black participants. The dependent variable was SRH, independent employment, age, sex, marital status, education, income were covariates. Race moderator. Results: associated with better SRH overall. A significant statistical interaction reflected racial differences in effect (above beyond education income) on protective effects weaker for than individuals. Conclusion: varies across groups, difference can also be seen during COVID-19 pandemic. Diminished returns SES indicators such as compared people may reflect some additional risk middle-class communities US.
